It may not be the most magical destination in Kenya, but if you are looking to spend the
day cycling downhill, seeing some cool views, and being hot this is the route for you.
I completed this ride before I had discovered komoot, so the link to the route is just a planned route. I left Tigoni at 6.00am in the morning, waking up to mist and fog that limited my vision to about 4 feet in front of me. By the end of the day I found myself in scorching dry heat as I got closer to the soda lake. It was a cool route that followed a worn-out and quiet tarmac road. As you cycle from kiserian you reach a place called 'Corner Baridi' (The cold corner), and let me tell you, that was a cold, windy corner. After you descend champagne ridge, and let me tell you, there was no champagne there. Just a beautiful view.
When I finally reached magadi town it was closed. There was a barrier and two security guards who informed me that the town had been shut since covid. The Tata chemical factory that featured in the distance had taken over control of the town. During covid it was able to place restrictions on who could enter magadi and had maintained its control even after things had gone back to normal. The guards were nice enough but said there was nowhere for me to stay. They could let me through but I would have to exit and continue my journey onwards. I decided to go home.
350 bob for a seat in a probox. 150 bob to strap my bike to the roof. I'd be home for dinner. I realised that my comfy seat was not mine for long. As we continued to add passengers (4 in the boot, 4 in the middle, 3 in the front) I knew my days were numbered. As we stopped for the final passenger the driver looked at me, handed me a very thin pillow, and asked if I would sit in the middle. I replied - "Ukianguka hii gari, nitakufa." So began one of the stranger car journeys I have had in Kenya.
