This is one of the best rides I’ve done from Limuru and awesome for an overnight trip. With a mixture of different road conditions you get a bit everything and finish up camping at an incredible spot.
Click on the picture and follow the link to a Komoot map to Mt Suswa. Please note the starting point is Tigoni but I’m sure you can adjust it if you are coming from Nairobi. I use Komoot but I think you can copy it into other apps like Strava.
To get home I cycled down to Suswa town, jumped on a Matatu to Mai-Mahiu, changed there and took one to Limuru. I was home by 10.30am! On my Komoot profile Day 10 is the walking route we used with camels but is the same as the cycle route down to Suswa town. The next map (a rest day) is the map for a 24km circular walking route around the inner crater.
It’s a real mixed bag which is maybe one of the attractions of the route. As with all my trips I ride a steel frame Dawes touring bike with a few changes. It’s served me very well in Kenya and handled this route well.
Starting with dirt tracks you then spend time of one of the newest and smoothest tarmac roads I have come across. With a section of awesome cutbacks it’s an incredible ride off the escarpment down into the Rift Valley. Just watch out for the boda drivers shifting lots of charcoal towards Nairobi.
On turning off the tarmac onto the mountain you’ll cycle up big blocks of volcanic rock, it can get a bit bumping and heavy rain will cut culverts, but you can make it up.
Kiano is the man up at mt suswa. From organising guides for walks, trips to the suswa caves and even sorting out a sheep Kiano is the person to speak to. At the time of writing the entrance fee for Kenyan residents is 1000 ksh and camping is also 1000 ksh. Its best to give Kiano a heads up before you arrive so he can book a camping area, especially if you are a big group. He can be contacted on WhatsApp on +254 711434391.
